The Big Picture of Health Related Fitness

Being physically fit has a number of meanings to each and every person. However, a concrete definition is a set of qualities that an individual have or already achieved that correlated with the ability to perform physical activity. Therefore, it ultimately does not boil down to if you can run far or lift a lot. Being fit is no way corresponding with the activities you can do, what level you can do it at, or even how long you can do it. However, these are very important measures of fitness, but they only stress one area. Fitness is composed of five areas:

  • Flexibility
  • Body composition
  • Muscular strength
  • Muscular endurance
  • Cardiorespiratory endurance

In order to see what level of fitness one is currently at, they will not only look at one area, but will have to look at the entire picture.

Cardio-respiratory endurance

Cardio-respiratory endurance has to do with the body’s respiratory and circulatory systems. This is what supplies the energy to keep going with physical activities. In order to enhance your cardio-respiratory strength, you should try to keep your heart rate at a high steady pace for a specified length of time when swimming, bicycling, or even walking. Whatever activity you choose does not have to be over the top to help enhance your cardio-respiratory endurance. You should start off slowly and continue working your way up.

Muscular strength

Muscular strength is all about the muscle you use to exert force during a specific activity. A key tip to making your muscles stronger is to work them against resistance. You can do this by using weights or even gravity itself. If you are looking to build up muscle strength, you may want to start lifting weights or even choosing the stairs over the elevators.

Muscular endurance

Muscular endurance should not be confused with muscular strength. Muscular endurance is all about how much your muscle can take without fatigue. You can easily improve your muscle endurance by walking, bicycling, jogging, and even dancing!

Body composition

Body composition is all about the amount of fat, muscle, bone, and other parts of your body. However, your body weight may not fluctuate over time, but that does not mean you are not building up muscle either. A regular scale cannot tell you what your body fat is or your muscles. Nevertheless, body composition is an important factor for maintaining your weight and keeping you at a healthy range.

Flexibility

Just because you are in your weight range does not always mean you are flexible. A lot of people find out that they are not as flexible as they thought they were. Working on your flexibility prevents injuries throughout all of your life. Improving flexibility is quite easy. You should try any activity that lengthens the muscles. The main activities used are swimming and basic stretching programs.

Now that you got a better picture of physically fit, you will know if you are physically fit or not. Being physically fit will benefit your body in many ways. You will have less health issues than someone who is not physically fit. Always remember, you access if you are physically fit by the whole picture not the small picture.
